COMMEDIA LAB
This class is designed to give an introduction to the physical style of Commedia dell'Arte. Coming from Italy, Commedia is a style of masked theatre that is rich in many traditions and is an important element to a lot of contemporary mask training. Students will explore the physical characterization and specific stance, gesture and locomotion of the four major fixed-type characters: the Lovers, the Old Men, the Servants, and the Capitano. Improvisation is a major element to this work as students will be continually exploring the world of these characters through exercises and creating scenarios. There will also be an element of slapstick, a style of physical comedy/stage combat, specific to the Commedia dell'Arte.

1) Where are classes located?
CYPT is proud to be able to offer classes in both the North and South quadrants of the city. It is our aim to make our camps as accessible as possible to all participants. Locations vary depending on availability. We work out of Dalhousie Community Association, The Unitarian Church of Calgary, the Impro Depot and Riverbend Community Association among others.
2) What are class hours?
Classes run for 2 hours time slots. We offer classes in the evenings during the week and during the day on Saturdays. Please click here for the Fall Class schedule.3) Will my child be working with groups of children who are much older or younger than they are?
This year our goal was to find ideal age ranges for each class. Our classes are now divided by the grade your child is entering in September. Children will be with kids of the same age or 1 year older or younger than them.4) What do the children do during class?
Our instructors will teach your children various dramatic skills such as improvisation, storytelling, character work, movement, voice and more, through games and exercises. The goal is to apply the skills learned to create a final performance for friends and families. In the second semester, further skills are explored and often script work comes into play as well. For our teens, we have set up specialty classes this year such as improvisation, commedia dell’arte, clowning and playwriting.5) Who are your staff members?
Fall and Winter Class instructors include professional actors, writers, directors, and teachers with university and college degrees and post secondary students. All instructors are required to get a Police Security Clearance Check on a yearly basis. Click here to meet the instructors of CYPT.6) What should my child bring to class?
As our classes are usually quite physical it is a good idea to wear clothing that is loose and comfortable to move in. It is also a good idea to bring a water bottle and a snack (NO NUTS PLEASE.) Sometimes instructors may ask students to bring a notebook and a pencil. Specific requirements will be determined on the first day of class.7) Do you offer a bursary program?
Yes, CYPT has a strong bursary program that offers lower income families a chance to apply to have up to half their program fees covered. Please call the office at 403.230.2664 to request a bursary application or for more information.
