OUR HISTORY

Calgary Young People's Theatre was founded as a Non-Profit Charitable Society in June 1992 by Jackie Pontin, Brian Dorscht and an interested Board of Directors.  Fifteen years later we have become a mainstay in the Calgary children’s theatre community, having encouraged creativity, confidence and teamwork in thousands of young Calgarians.

We have grown and diversified since our inception. Our first Summer Drama Camp, held in a Kensington church brought 36 young people together, along with 3 instructors. Currently, we work with over 700 children in our drama programs annually. Our young people have performed in main productions in such locations as The University Theatre, Fort Calgary, The Uptown Theatre and Heritage Park's Canmore Opera House. Since 2004, our performances have been taking place at the Vertigo Studio Theatre.

Longstanding supporters include:

  • The Calgary Public Library has partnered with our Story Theatre Troupe since 1999
  • Hopewell Residential Communities who assisted in major sponsorship of our productions and theatre renovations
  • CIBC/Wood Gundy with their ongoing financial support

We have produced over fifty professional caliber shows and run fifteen successful years of summer camps.  Many of our alumni have gone on to work in the Calgary Theatre community and beyond.  With our programs continually expanding and diversifying, we look forward to introducing more and more students to the performing arts and making even bigger waves in the Calgary theatre community over the next fifteen years!
