What’s New at CYPT?
Summer time is finally here and we couldn’t be more excited. We’re ramping up for the 16th season of Calgary’s largest summer drama camps. But lets not get ahead of ourselves – we need to look back over the last few months and catch up!
The Adventures of Pinocchio was a smashing success. CYPT revisited it’s inaugural production with a brand new cast. Directed by Artistic Director Mat Mailandt and Jason Long, this production featured singing, dancing and all sorts of antics. Brittany Burgess, Arrielle Edwards, Claren Grosz, Martin Law, Kieran MacNaughton, Haley Mailandt, Carolyn Ruether and Kyle Visvanathan did a fabulous time bringing the classic tale to life. Congrats to everyone involved.
Spring break Drumma camps were back with record breaking enrollment! Almost 50 young campers learned about African drumming and created plays that involved percussion. Barb Burfoot also led the students in impressive drum performances. All in all, it was one jam packed week! Thanks to Jason, Laura and Andrew for their work as instructors this spring break.
Winter classes also wrapped up, including our preschool Act One program, A Little Bit of Everything, Improv and Comedy and the ever popular Animation Exploration. Each class had a very memorable final performance where all of the hard work of the students was showcased. Laura, Paula, Kristen, Francois, and Ray did a great job working with the creative students in our programs. Fall and winter class schedules will be online in early July, so make sure you check www.cypt.ca soon for full details.
We’re also about to announce our 2008/09 season, so stay tuned. The first show will be our summer conservatory show, The Tempest by William Shakespeare August 7-9th, 2008 at The Engineered Air Theatre. But the rest of our season features plays by an author famous for his quirky rhymes, a story where toys come to life and a very exciting world premiere production! Check our website in early July for that as well.
Most importantly however, have a great summer and we hope to see you out at our drama camps.
Warmest Regards,
Mat Mailandt

CYPT’s 2008 Summer Drama Camps:
SPIES and SLEUTHS (and Shakespeare for Teens)!
Hello CYPT students and parents!
After a successful winter semester, a heart-warming production of The Adventures of Pinocchio and a very ‘drumma-tic’ spring camp, CYPT is looking forward to another great summer of drama camps and an ambitious new production of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest! This summer we have a few brand new themes that are sure to have something for everyone.
Our full day one week camps for grades 1 to 6 are all about Spies and Sleuths! Solve mysteries, find clues and catch ‘bad guys’, the only limit is your own imagination! Similarly our Mini-Mysteries half day camp for pre-schoolers promises to be a great way for your child to discover their creativity and confidence while doing some good old-fashioned spying and sleuthing.
Also back this year by popular demand is our two-week Shakespeare camps for grades 5 – 10, only this summer there’s a twist - two of the four sessions of this program will combine Musical Theatre with Shakespeare! Whether you’re interested in adding some song and dance to the classic works of Shakespeare, or doing a more traditional version of a Shakespeare play, the choice is yours depending on what session you register in!

Shakespeare campers rocking out!
Also brand new this year, CYPT will be offering a lunch program for full day one and two week campers. For $30.00/week, your child can choose a snack or drink in the morning, a lunch, a snack and a drink at noon and
another drink or snack in the afternoon. Our ‘fuel for fun’ menu serves only healthy and tasty items – the perfect fuel for solving mysteries! Pay in advance at the time of registration and never worry about packing a lunch! Visit our website at www.cypt.ca for more information or to register.
Also, be sure not to miss CYPT’s summer conservatory production of The Tempest running August 7-9 at The Engineered Air Theatre. Our summer conservatory program for ages 12 and up is a three-week course that gives students a chance to emulate the professional theatrical process by rehearsing a production of The Tempest, directed by veteran director Anton Degroot, culminating in three performances at The Engineered Air
Theatre downtown. The Tempest promises to be one of CYPT’s most ambitious projects, so be sure not to miss these young actors at work.
Can’t wait to see you all this summer!

| CYPT Star Profile!
Hi, I’m Carolyn Ruether and I’m 14 years old and currently on my way to grade 10. The theatre always interested and entertained me, but the thought never crossed my mind that I could take part in anything like it. I first started with Calgary Young People’s Theatre when I was 11 years old, in a musical theatre program. It was then that I realized that performing was for me.
At the age of 13 I auditioned for the 2007 production of The Jungle Book. I won’t lie, that first audition was scary, but when it was over I had gained a whole new level of confidence in myself. I was so excited to be given the opportunity to play the role of Bagheera. The Jungle Book was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.
The following year I knew I had to come back, and I auditioned again (still as scary as the first time!) and I was able to play two roles in CYPT’s 15th Anniversary production of Pinocchio. I had the time of my life! I am really looking forward to my first experience with Shakespeare this summer, with CYPT’s The Tempest.
When it all comes down to it, the reason why I love acting is pretty simple. For a short period of time, you get to live someone else’s life. The adventure that you go through learning how they move, how they think and how they see the world is unreal. You get to breathe life into that character, and make it more than just a person from someone’s imagination. You have a responsibility to live that character’s life, and it’s a great experience.

CYPT has been the best experience of my life. I have met lifelong friends who actually understand me and like the same things I do. As my parents say, there actually are people as weird as I am! I have been able to work with extraordinary people who have introduced me to the world of theatre in a new exciting way. When I go to rehearsals I know that I won’t be judged on how silly I look, because everybody’s doing the same thing! CYPT has definitely been an extraordinary part of my life and has helped me realize and embrace my passion for performing. I will definitely be with CYPT as long as I can!
